Soil and Water conservation

India is home to the fourth largest agriculture sector in the world. For a majority of the country, an estimated 72% of the 1.1 billion people who live in rural India, Agriculture is a way of life. Soil and water are the important resources for Agriculture. Soil and water management is very poor in India.

There are two types of irrigations - surface irrigation and the ground water irrigation. Management of water resources is very important in surface irrigation. Water body management and effective rain water conservation should be there. The disproportionate utilization of ground water against requirement has made the situation tough. Now the ground water has gone down, wells are dried; one has to drill 1000-1200 ft for getting ground water; which should not be done.

When comes to soil, the existing monocropping practice has spoiled the soil health. And there is no barrier for soil erosion. Hence MOTHER is focused on soil and water conservation in farmer fields since 2002.

Silt removal in 69 water bodies (Traditional tanks) with the support of Jala Samvardhane Yojana Sangha, Land treatment activities in 16000 Ha, horticulture and forestry plantation with the assistance of Watershed Development Department and NABARD are the major programs.

Formation of trench cum bund, farm ponds, waste weirs in farmer fields helped in arresting easy flow of soil and water. Addition of horticulture and forestry species brought additional agriculture income for the farmer.

With soil and water conservation structures organized Farmer Field Schools with the assistance of Krishi Vigyan Kendra(KVK). Trained farmers about multi cropping, diversified agriculture, field rest and many other things.

At present implementing Integrated Watershed Management Program (IWMP) with the assistance of Watershed Development Department. Our role to community mobilization and motivate farmers to implement soil and water conservation activities in their field.
