MOTHER believes that sustainable rural development is achieved by integrating environmental conservation with social and economic empowerment, and through this approach the organization promotes sustainable livelihoods, strengthens community institutions, and creates income-generating opportunities that enable vulnerable households to become self-reliant and financially resilient; under the Tribal Development Project supported by NABARD, Bengaluru, MOTHER worked to enhance sustainable livelihoods for 508 tribal families in four villages of Kudligi Taluk by establishing climate-resilient farming systems for 445 farming families and promoting diversified income-generating activities for 63 landless households, adopting an integrated livelihood development strategy that focused on establishing One-Acre WADI (Agro-Horti-Forestry) models to create sustainable farm income, promoting alternative income-generating enterprises for landless families, and strengthening community institutions, women’s empowerment, health, and sustainable agriculture practices; as part of the project, 437 acres were developed under the WADI model with plantations supported by Soil and Water Conservation (SWC) and Water Resource Development (WRD) interventions, 63 landless families were supported through sustainable livelihood enterprises such as animal husbandry, petty shops, and tamarind trading, 12 technical and livelihood training programmes were conducted to enhance knowledge, skills, and enterprise management, aftercare support was provided for 224 acres to improve plant survival and ensure long-term sustainability, 60 kitchen gardens were established to improve household nutrition, 40 skill development programmes were organized for women, 40 Self-Help Groups (SHGs) were strengthened through revolving fund support, 8 community health camps were organized, 4 village hygiene and sanitation awareness programmes were conducted, 6 acres of floriculture and 30 acres of herbal cultivation were promoted to encourage crop diversification and improved farm incomes, irrigation access was enhanced through the distribution of 360 cement rings, 2 tractor-mounted water tankers, and critical irrigation support for plantation establishment, and community-based organizations and participant groups were strengthened while one Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) was facilitated to improve collective marketing, value addition, and access to markets.
